Energy performance improvement of cold cabinets

BSRIA brought together two of the UK's largest retailers, Tesco and Sainsburys, to improve the efficiency of cold cabinetsThis Carbon Trust funded project is concerned specifically with reducing energy and carbon emissions within UK food retail units, by developing and implementing improved efficiency for the design, operation and management of cold cabinets.
The project is specifically aimed at the interaction between the cold cabinets and main store ventilation system working towards a more aerodynamically robust cabinet design.
The project outputs includes:
- Producing literature reviews
- Conducting store surveys
- Developing and executing laboratory tests
- Carrying out CFD analysis
- Trialling the implementation of recommendations within two stores
- Suggesting further improvements arising from trials
- Communicating the results and recommendations from the project
The project brings together a team from BSRIA and two major retailers; Tesco and Sainsburys, who between them represent 65+% of cold cabinet energy consumption within major UK supermarkets. Later stages of the project will involve the Institute of Refrigeration, British Refrigeration Association and other BSRIA members.
