Job Book for Building Services - BSRIA toolkit
August 2009
The RIBA Plan of Work is a useful framework for most forms of procurement. Since the 2008 version was published BSRIA has been revising its building services design guidance to dovetail more closely with the way that architects work. A Design Framework for Building Services was the first publication to be re-aligned, and now BSRIA has updated its project management guide: BG1/2009 Building Services Job Book.

"The Building Services Job Book provides easy-to-use activity checklists, tools and templates" Glenn Hawkins, authorNot only has this new guide been aligned with the latest Plan of Work, it also contains a suite of procedures and pro formas that engineers can easily use (and architects will readily recognise).
The Building Services Job Book is more of a toolkit than a publication. Designed to help building services professionals provide engineering services on construction projects, it organises the delivery of engineering services within a project management framework. Responsibilities and actions are arranged into work stages that dovetail with standard forms of procurement including the RIBA Plan of Work (2008), the ACE schedules, Office of Government Commerce (OGC) Gateways, and the requirements of the recently published Soft Landings Framework.
The Building Services Job Book provides easy-to-use activity checklists, tools and templates in order for building services professionals to respond systematically to the stages of briefing, design development, construction, pre-handover and long term aftercare. The tools and templates sections include pro-formas for design brief responses, and templates for risk assessment and commissioning. There is also a range of templates for managing time, cost, quality and safety at all stages of a project.
Guidance is also provided to dovetail and support emerging issues faced by building services delivery teams, such as site waste management, sustainability, energy use and post-occupancy aftercare services.
Copies of BG1/2009 Building Services Job Book are available price £80 (£40 to BSRIA members). The toolkit will also be available in Word format on a licensed CD for use on personal computers and company intranets.
Visit the Soft Landings pages for more information on Soft Landings and a free download of the Framework. The pdf is free to both BSRIA Members and non-members, as BSRIA wants to encourage wide take-up of the process. Don't forget that you can also purchase a printed version of the BG4/2009 Soft Landings Framework from the BSRIA Bookshop.
